Australia’s Biggest Oyster Competition: The Field is wide open!

Australia's Biggest Oyster contestants with their oysters - they are as big as your head!
Will we find another world record breaker in 2025?

The hunt for Australia’s Biggest Oyster is on, and the field is wide open following the passing of 2024’s world record holder, Jill (3.01kg).

Keep your eyes open from around 10am as these massive molluscs are carried through the festival (or pushed in carts) by their growers.

Afterwards, you can join in with the farmers as we take the biggest photo, of Australia’s Biggest Oyster!

Our youngest contender, Riley Norris, age 9, will present Aphrodite who is about the same age! In 2024 she weighed in at 1.75kg and we can’t wait to see how she (and Riley) has grown.

Champion shuckers and identical twin brothers John and Jim Yiannaros will be back too, after the pair came equal fourth with ‘Nick’ and ‘Georgia’ both weighing in at 2.18kg in 2024.

They aren’t the only twins to be competing, the master grower of these mighty bi-vales Bernie Connell has announced his twin daughters are both entering this year.

2023

This year’s competition, proudly sponsored by Australia’s Oyster Coast, will be co-hosted by Davin Charlesworth (Australia’s Oyster Coast) and Dr Jayne Weller (Montague Vets), who will ensure each oyster is alive, weighed and measured according to competition rules.

Farmers from across Rock Oyster Country will present their biggest contenders, including previous champions from the Clyde River and Shoalhaven regions. Expect some friendly rivalry between Connell Oysters, Batemans Bay Oysters, Jim Wild’s Oysters, the Oyster Shed on Wray Street, and some newcomers!

Shoutout to our incredible oyster farmers – after an incredibly busy summer and Easter period, they have been out combing their leases for the biggest pets, and we can’t wait to see what they bring.

Who will claim the crown in 2025? Join us at midday on Saturday, May 4 to find out, it’s all included in your Saturday General Admission.
