Every year, from May to November, the stunning coastline of Eurobodalla and Rock Oyster Country becomes the Humpback Highway, and a prime vantage point for one of nature’s greatest spectacles – travelling whales! The South Coast of NSW is a key part of their route as they` journey from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland to breed and give birth.
It’s not just Humpback Whales either, there are Southern Right Whales, Minke Whales – even Killer Whales! Everyone gets involved, from dolphins who escort new mums and their calves to seabirds who are travelling for the same reasons – family and food!
We are fascinated by these air breathing mammals that live in the sea. They treasure their families and friends and create songs that span generations. They love to play and work together and (orca aside) get along with everyone. How inspirational!
These gentle giants can be seen breaching, tail-slapping, and even spy-hopping close to shore. Its always memorable, especially if you are close enough to hear their voices and smell their breath!
The season is getting longer each year as whale populations grow, and this year we had our first sighting the week before the festival. The peak months are June and July, as the whales head north, and then again from September to November as they return south, often with newborn calves in tow.
And what could be better than a close encounter with these majestic whales? How about enjoying a dozen freshly shucked rock oysters afterwards?
There’s nothing quite like pairing the wonders of the ocean with the taste of the sea, all while soaking up the natural beauty of the ports at Narooma and Batemans Bay.
