Rock Oyster Farmers vie for Sydney Royal accolades

Australia’s biggest aquaculture competition – The Sydney Royal Aquaculture Competition is open for entries, and we can’t wait to see who wins!

Australian Oyster farmers, big and small, are encouraged to send a batch of their finest to the esteemed Sydney Royal Aquaculture competition, with entries closing in less than two weeks.

If you’re heading there on March 26, you can see the judging take place live from 10am.

Held by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) since it’s inception in 2001, the competition has stood as a beacon of excellence, propelling the oyster industry forward by celebrating top-quality produce.

The prestigious event not only honours Australia’s best aquaculture producers but also provides invaluable feedback to all participants, which enhances industry standards across the board.

John Susman, Sydney Royal Aquaculture Chair of Judges and friend of Narooma Oyster Festival, emphasises the competition’s role in showcasing the best that producers have to offer.

“This is more than a competition; it’s a celebration of excellence and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our oyster farmers. Every participant, whether small-scale artisans or large-scale operations, gains visibility among the who’s who of the seafood industry and more importantly with buyers from distributors and retailers to chefs and consumers,” he said.

“Medal winners at the RAS Oyster Competition regularly achieve higher prices for their oysters.”

The 2024 edition will see the return of esteemed New Zealand Restaurateur Martin Bosley, serving as a guest judge and lending his discerning palate and wealth of knowledge to the proceedings. ‘Bos’ was a judge in the Narooma Oyster Festival’s shucking competition in 2023 and also delivered a fabulous session in the cooking demonstration program.

Entries due:  Wednesday, 14 February 2024
